Add a News Item
To add a news item - select 'News Item' from the 'Add new...' drop-down menu.
In the opened Add News Item screen - fill in the Title (this a required field, indicated by the red square).
The Summary field is not obligatory, but you should fill it in with a short description of the folder. This text is used when listing available items and by the search function. A feature only available to the news item, is the ability to add an image and an image caption. Images can still be added into the body section as usual even if an external image is loaded.
An image loaded as an attachment will display in the news item and will automatically be scaled and positioned on the news listing page.
Plone has a default News folder which contains a News Collection that gathers all published news items from the site. Clicking on the 'News' tab in the top navigation area will lead you to the list of all the news items loaded on the site starting from the latest news item and descending down to the oldest. The News is displayed by title, summary and image if one has been attached. As the summary field is used in this display it is important to fill this field with a brief, but descriptive, outline.
News Portlet
The news portlet is automatically loaded onto all sites. It defaults onto the right side of the main text section of the website and displays as many published news items as have been requested (defaults to 5). The display is set for newest to oldest published items.
If you wish to change the number of news items that are displayed click on the "Manage portlets" text that you will see on the left / right side of the page. If the portlet is displayed on all pages of the site, it has been added on the home page. If a portlet is displayed only in a specific folder you will need to go to that folder to access it.
The News portlet is displayed on all pages, so to access it you will need to go to your home page (click on 'Home' or on your logo). See the section on Portlets for how to access the portlet area.
